Iyengar Beginners Series

Instructors: Devon Dederich1 (see the Schedule page for information on meeting days/times.)

A step-by-step introduction to yoga, designed for complete beginners, and for those interested in understanding the fundamentals of the practice of asana. The class is also useful for those returning to practice from illness or injury, and attention is given to individual difficulties.

We explore basic philosophy and vocabulary, principles of alignment, and observation of the mind and its movement. In the course the series we develop a basic repertoire of standing poses, forward bends, back bends, twisting poses and fundamental inversions, all at a beginner level, and accounting for injuries and physical conditions. One class in each series is devoted to the practice of pranayama (breath work) and meditation.

Even a beginner practice in yoga can contribute to physical, mental, and emotional relaxation, strength and stability. This series can be repeated, and in time prepares students for attendance in the ongoing Iyengar Level 1 classes.

Devon's weekday series meets once a week on Tuesday evenings.

1 FULL-TIME STUDENTS (with ID) are offered a 25% discount off all Devon's classes.

FOR THOSE IN FINANCIAL NEED: I will never turn an earnest student away who lacks the means to pay for classes. If you need a reduction in your fees, just ask. Yoga is supposed to work like this; it is my job and my joy to offer this to you.

If you have injuries or medical conditions that might influence what you do in class, please ask your health care provider first, then speak with the instructor before your first class. Please come to class wearing shorts or leggings and a t-shirt. If you don't have or wear shorts or leggings, then wear pants that allow you to stretch without binding. If you come to class wearing work clothes, Clear Spring Studio has changing areas with hangers and racks to protect your clothes. Always take your shoes off immediately as you enter the front door of Clear Spring, and store them in the wooden rack just inside the front door of the studio. If your feet are dirty, please wash them before entering the studio or zendo areas. Do not eat for at least two hours before class. If you have low blood sugar, be sure to drink nutritious liquids that will pass out of your stomach by class time.
